As a young boy growing up in the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas native, Dj Avalanche always had a passion for music. His long journey to becoming “The Caribbean’s Hottest DJ” started on the island of St. Croix where he spent countless weekends perusing at Bee’s Record Shop looking for the latest cassettes (mix-tapes) in addition to cassettes his mother, a junior high school teacher at the time would bring home after confiscating them from her students. These cassettes featured various genres of music and an art form that a young Gregory would later adapt. He was originally and heavily influenced into the Dj art from listening to the likes of Jamaican based selectas and soundsystems. In the early 90’s King Addies, Stone Love, Waggy T, Bass Odyssey, MetroMedia, Chinese Laundry and Renaissance sparked his interest as sounds with their creative methods of entertainment. However, his interest was not limited to the Jamaican Dj culture he was also intrigued by the renowned Djs of the Hip Hop culture of that time also, Kid Kapri, Dj Premier, and Jam Master Jay to name a few. Also, he took heed to a few local Djs at the time. It was this interest of different styles and cultures that helped him create a style of his own later on as a professional Dj. His interest grew more and more with the introduction of “clashes”. He would congregate with his peers on various occasions and would replicate “clashes”, a term used for Dj battles. Growing up with very little resources forced him to work even harder at achieving his goal. He took advantage of every opportunity that arrived for him to get himself closer to becoming a successful Dj came.
